About this trip
Seven nights over four bases, and the extra two nights go exactly where they are most useful. Petra gets a second night, which is what makes the Monastery climb or a return visit possible rather than theoretical, and the Dead Sea gets a full free day at the end with no vehicle and nothing scheduled.
Little Petra is the addition on the way south to Wadi Rum. It is a Nabataean site a few kilometres north of the main one, three open areas linked by a 450-metre canyon, and it is quiet in a way the Siq never is.
What you go for
- Two nights at Wadi Musa, so Petra is a full day rather than a stop
- Little Petra, Siq al-Barid, on the way south
- A night in a Wadi Rum camp with a two-hour Bedouin jeep tour
- A free day at the Dead Sea to end on, with two nights there
The route
Day by day
Times are the operator's planned schedule. They shift with the season, the light and the traffic on the day.
- Day 1
Arrival in Amman
Queen Alia International Airport
Met off the aircraft by our representative, through the visa formalities and baggage reclaim, then the transfer into Amman.
Check in at your hotel in Amman.
- Day 2
Jerash, then downtown Amman
MorningBreakfast at the hotel.
Jerash
The Roman city north of Amman: paved and colonnaded streets, hilltop temples, theatres, public squares and plazas, baths, fountains and the city walls. Your guide has up to two hours here.
AfternoonDowntown Amman
Two hours in the old capital — the Citadel, the amphitheatre below it, and the Archaeological and Folklore museums. Closed on Tuesdays.
EveningBack to the hotel.
- Day 3
Madaba, Mount Nebo and Kerak, then Petra
Overnight: Petra
MorningBreakfast, then south on the King's Highway.
Madaba
The sixth-century mosaic map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land in the floor of St George's church, and the Byzantine and Umayyad mosaic work around the town.
Mount Nebo
Ten kilometres west of Madaba, over the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea and the West Bank, and by tradition the burial place of Moses.
Kerak
A twelfth-century Crusader castle on a triangular plateau, the last stop before the descent into Wadi Musa.
EveningArrive in Wadi Musa and check in for two nights.
- Day 4
Petra, all day
Overnight: Petra
MorningBreakfast at the hotel.
Full dayPetra
In through the kilometre-long Siq under eighty-metre walls to the Treasury, then the Street of Facades and the hundreds of rock-cut tombs beyond it, the Roman-style theatre, the temples, the sacrificial altars and the colonnaded street. The short horse ride to the mouth of the Siq is included and your guide walks you to Qasr al-Bint; what you do with the rest of the day, including the climb to the Monastery, is yours.
EveningSecond night in Wadi Musa.
- Day 5
Little Petra, and into Wadi Rum
Overnight: Wadi Rum
MorningBreakfast at the hotel.
Little Petra
Siq al-Barid, the cold canyon, known locally as Al Beidha for the pale rock. A Nabataean site north of Wadi Musa with buildings cut into the sandstone walls, three open areas linked by a canyon 450 metres long. Part of the Petra Archaeological Park but entered separately.
AfternoonWadi Rum by jeep
South into the desert for a two-hour Bedouin jeep tour between the sandstone massifs, finishing at the camp.
EveningDinner at the camp and the night under canvas.
- Day 6
Wadi Rum to the Dead Sea
Overnight: Dead Sea
MorningBreakfast at the camp.
North to the Dead Sea, 55 kilometres south-east of Amman and 430 metres below sea level. The rest of the day is at leisure.
EveningCheck in for two nights.
- Day 7
A free day at the Dead Sea
Overnight: Dead Sea
MorningBreakfast at the hotel.
Full dayNothing scheduled and no vehicle. The water is around ten times as salty as the ocean, so the swimming is really floating.
- Day 8
Departure
Breakfast, then the transfer from the Dead Sea to Queen Alia International Airport. The operator times it to put you at the terminal three and a half hours before your flight.
